Australian Shepherds

The Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA) was established as the parent club for the breed in 1957. It is the largest independent breed-specific club in the United States.

The ASCA Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes, and for purposes of prevention of cruelty to animals. Such purposes include, but are not limited to, granting educational scholarships and promoting the health and welfare of the Australian Shepherd dog.

The Aussie Rescue & Placement Helpline (ARPH) is the official Australian Shepherd rescue organization of ASCA. ARPH's mission is to rescue Australian Shepherds and place them into loving, caring, and permanent homes, and to educate the public about all aspects of owning an Aussie.

The Australian Shepherd Health & Genetics Institute (ASHGI) provides programs and information to address the inherited diseases from which the breed sometimes suffers. ASHGI works with researchers, breed clubs, canine health organizations, and foundations that provide grant funds for canine genetics research.

Toby's Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources and support to aid in the fight against canine epilepsy. Established in 2004, Toby's Foundation seeks to increase awareness of canine epilepsy and to help eliminate it by supporting the research to find a gene marker and develop a screening test for this disease.

The MDRI flaw found in herding breeds is a genetic defect which allows deadly drug reactions to occur, associated with ivermectin, Heartguard, etc. See the MDR1 buster alert here.

See ASHGI's MDR1 FAQ here.
